Postdoc positions, ice-core chemistry & modelling - Cambridge, UK

Two postdoctoral research positions - in high-resolution ice-core chemistry and in palaeoclimate modelling - are on offer at the University of Cambridge, UK.

Both positions are for two years, based in Cambridge, UK, and under the leadership of Professor Eric Wolff.

Description

In the ERC-funded WACSWAIN project, the aim is to daignose the state of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) in the last interglacial.

During the 2018-19 Antarctic field season, scientists from the university successfully collected an ice core, 651 m long, to bedrock at Skytrain Ice Rise, bordering the WAIS.

Now the project seeks two further postdoctoral scientists to join the team.

Position One

The first role, undertaking High Resolution Ice Core Chemical Analysis, will develop a laser ablation ICP-MS system for ice cores to analyse the highly thinned older ice in the core.

Position Two

The second position will carry out palaeoclimate modelling using water isotopes in order to interpret the differences between isotope records of various Antarctic ice cores in relation to scenarios of WAIS size.
