Research Fellow, Organic Geochemistry - Birmingham, UK

A Research Fellow in Organic Geochemistry is available at the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham, UK. The project is "Unlocking the Toolbox of Soil Bacterial Biomarkers".

Salary: £29,799 to £38,832 with potential progression once in post to £41,212 a year.

This is a full-time fixed-term/contract position for 39 months. Note that this role is not restricted to just UK and EU students.

This is a postdoctoral research position in organic geochemistry, with a focus on paleoclimate reconstruction, based within the research group of Dr James Bendle. The successful applicant will work as part of a Leverhulme Trust-funded team focused on undertaking the first fundamental global surveys of the compound specific isotopic composition of 3-OH-FA biomarkers in soils and lake sediments.

The postholder will oversee geochemical laboratory work, working with our Geochemistry Experimental Officer and bursary students on the routine extraction and separation of the biomarkers. They will collaborate with a NERC PhD student, and a Leverhulme PhD student to interpret and integrate the 3-OH-FA cs-isotopic data with molecular distributions and bacterial taxonomy of their gram-negative bacterial precursors (from the same samples).

- First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
- High level analytical capability in organic geochemistry, with experience in the compound specific isotopic analysis of organic biomarkers for paleoclimate proxy data generation
- Good level of numerical and data analysis skills
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly in both written and oral form
- Ability to assess resource requirements and contribute to broader management/administration of the project
- Contribute to the planning and organising of the research project
- Co-ordinate work between multiple Co-Is, PPs and collaborators at the University of Birmingham (James Bendle, Ilya Mandel) at CEH (Rob Griffiths, Dan Reid), Mike Hren (UConn, USA), Mick Griffiths (William Patterson, USA), Jessica Conroy (UIUC, USA)
- Decide in consultation with the PI/Co-Is, PPs and PhDs on the most appropriate way of undertaking specified research activities
- Decide in consultation with the PI/Co-Is, PPs and PhDs how to analyse and interpret data from the specified research activities
- Decide in collaboration with co-authors which aspects of the research findings to include in presentations and publications and how to convey the findings
- Give guidance, support and advice to students on research related work including PhD students and decide the most appropriate method of providing this supervision
- Liaise with research staff and support staff on research-related matters
- Co-ordinate information flow between core project team, project partners and external stakeholders
- Give presentations and/or contribute to presentations at national and/or international conferences
- Maintain contact with (including membership of) appropriate professional bodies
